Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS)
What is MECS?
MECS stands for Minor Eye Conditions Service. It is a NHS funded service for all that are registered with a GP within Lambeth, Lewisham or Southwark. If you have a sudden concern with the health of your eyes or if your GP advises you to attend – you may be entitled to an appointment with a specifically accredited optometrist. These community based practices offer ease of access to highly trained health professionals with specialized equipment, with the aim of helping to manage your eye complaint.
** News Flash** A recent article on eye health in London stated that 'as an example of innovation, a recent evaluation of over 2300 visits of a primary care minor eye condition scheme (MECS) in Lambeth and Lewisham, found that first attendances to hospital eye services referred by GPs dropped by 26.8% compared with a comparison area without MECS. It (also) reported high patient satisfaction rates and close involvement of local ophthalmologists and local GPs.'
